The Pinch Runner Page 15
“Kind of weird here without any Barneys,” he said.
“Yes, but pleasant too.”
“I never minded Richard, but you’re right that Brendan was a little unpleasant.”
“And now we know why. He was living with a murderer.” Her phone vibrated, and she glanced down at it.
“Is it Detective Chip again?”
“No. It says spam.” She declined the call. “Chip stopped calling after that first day.”
“Really? I’m surprised. You never answered any of his questions, did you?”
“No, I sure didn’t, but ...” She stopped talking long enough to get the scorebook caught up. “He told me he didn’t believe in the paranormal,” she said under her breath. “I think that, when he really thought about it, he figured out that if I ever did answer his questions, he might not like the answers I’d give.”
“Mm-hmm,” Nate said contemplatively. “That makes sense. He might have decided it would be easier to just stay in the dark.”
“You’re on deck.”
“I know.” He leaned over and kissed her on the cheek. “Even so, maybe you should lie low next time crime comes to town. Maybe your supernatural assistant doesn’t want to be found out.”
She knew he didn’t, especially since she hadn’t seen hide nor hair of him since he’d left her standing beside the burning barn. “Maybe,” she mused. Then she kissed her husband back. “But I’m not making any promises.”
